Solar charge controller is a as regulator. It delivers power from PV(Photovoltaic) array to system loads & for the battery bank.

 If battery going on to nearly full than solar charge controller will taper of the charging current to control required voltage to charging the battery and keep it topped off. By being able to regulate the pv voltage, the solar controller protects of the battery. The key word is protects. Battery is a very most expensive part for a system, if solar charge controller will not be work perfectly than battery may be damage. So solar charge controller protects them from both overcharging and undercharging of the battery's.

Types of charge controller 
Solar charge controller are two types-
1st- PWM (Pulse-width modulation) technology.
2nd MPPT (Maximum power point tracking) charge controller technology

While charge controllers come in a vast range of prices, power ratings and features, they all fall into one of two basic categories- Pulse-width modulation(PWM) and Maximum power point tracking(MPPT).

PWM(Pulse-width modulation) types are relatively simple, using a switch between the PV array and the batterys. The switch is a able to open and close rapidy thus being able to pulse or "throttle back" the electricity coming from a solar panel in order to taper off the charge current as the battery's become full. PWM controller operate with a switch only the array voltage during operation is equal to the battery voltage. This means that you need to use nominal voltage solar panels with a PWM controller 36-cell panels for 12volatage nominal and 72 cell panels for 24viltage nominal.

MPPT  (Maximum power point tracking) Charge controller- MPPT charge controller are comparatively more sophisticated. This can adjust the input voltage and current of the PV array to find the optimum operating voltage that will generate the most power at a given moment below are graphs of the current vs. voltage (IV) and current v/s power(IP) for a nominal voltage PV arrays. By continously tracking and operating at VMP an MPPT controller will be able to generate more power than a PWM controller during bulk charging.
